Provo River Fly Fishing Report for 5/2/12

We had a trip today on the Middle Provo.  We got a late start due to our client getting stuck in Park City.  The flows dramatically increased in a matter of an hour so we thought the fishing might be a bust.  They were at 300 cfs at 10 and jumped to 600 by noon.  The fly fishing was anything but tough it was spectacular.  The water was chocolate milk when we got there and when we left pretty good clarity.  The flows dropped back down to 300 cfs by 6.  Anytime the flows increase and the water gets dirty it’s time to bust out the san juan worms.  I doubled up on the the worms one being hot pink and the other wine.  On the demo cast I stuck the biggest fish of the day.  I handed the rod to Dennis and his 3rd cast he caught one.  He stuck 5 fish on the first hole in 30 minutes of work.  We moved downstream and the clarity got better so we switched to sows and baetis’.  The fish mostly keyed in on the size 14 sow but did take the baetis.  Dennis ended up getting 15 to the net which was a relief, considering the start of the day.  Watch for the flows to increase dramatically in the following days.   Fish the Provo River with one of our expert Utah fly fishing guides!
