Provo River Fly Fishing Report 8/5/2012
Lower Provo River report. WOW! Fishing was insane today. One of the best days on the water for Simply Fishing this year. We had a morning trip and an afternoon trip. If you have been reading the reports you know that after 3 is bonkers as far as great fishing. The morning trip did pretty good but the afternoon trip was epic. In the morning we were picking them up on the Shoner copperhead and the John “cotton” Candy. In the afternoon we were catching them on the J.C.C. and the Shoner as well. We also were catching quite a few on the sow bug. Today was a day of many lost, plus 17 inch fish. We landed several 18 inchers with 2 over 19 inches breaking our flies off! Make sure to use 4x tippet for nymphing and 5x for dry fly fishing. I only saw 4 risers all day and was on the water 10 hours, so dry fly fishing is limited. If you can help it don’t fish before 3. The fishing has been night and day difference before that time period. The PMD hatch ignites it all. The hatch has been coming off strongest around 5-6 lately. Make sure to have some barr’s emergers in size 16 to fish as your top fly during that 5-6 period. We don’t fish many patterns that you find in stores but make sure to have Sow’s, pheasant tails, split case pmd’s and any dark nymph patterns in size 16 with a flashback. All of the above applies to the middle Provo River as well. If you want to get your hands on the Shoner or J.C.C. then give us a call and we can tie some up for you as well as other patterns that are working mentioned in other reports.
