Provo River Fly Fishing Report 8/7/2012
The lower Provo River is running at 540 cfs as of today and the water color has cleared up significantly. The fishing has been extremely slow in the mornings. The fishing has been really good from 4-dark. The caddis hatches are coming off after dark and the fish are really gorging themselves making them not as willing in the morning. We got into some fun caddis dry fly action last night. The fish were actually feeding on the dead PMD’s floating down the river but were taking size 14 light gray caddis’s. We have been using the copperhead shoner and sow combination the last two days with pretty good success. During the heaviest part of the hatch around 4-5 ish definately put on a size 16 pmd emerger (Barr’s emerger) and a split case pmd nymph. The sow seems to produce after 6ish and from morning to 4 the best. We pumped a stomach this afternoon and it was chuck full of caddis emergers so be willing to put one of those on if your not figuring out the fish. Fly fishing is just interesting we will fish a hole in one area and don’t do well and come back in an hour and have great success using exactly the same setup. Be willing to move around and try different parts of the river. The fish seem to be holding in the deeper faster runs in the day and moving into the shallows around 4 ish. Riffles in about 2 feet of water have been dynamite the last few days.
